A proven labor advocate, Crawford is committed to fighting working misclassification schemes and protecting collective bargaining rights – just as the court did last year when it ruled that Amazon Flex drivers are employees, not independent contractors. Teamsters played a decisive role in her victory, with political field organizers from Local 344 and Local 120 mobilizing across the state, visiting worksites, knocking on doors, and running phone banks in the final push before Election Day.

The Senate on Monday confirmed Lori Chavez-DeRemer 67-32 to lead the Labor Department. More than a dozen Democrats joined Republicans in backing the former House lawmaker, who garnered support from some labor union leaders and business groups. Chavez-DeRemer is set to take charge at DOL as the Trump administration seeks major cutbacks at the agency and across the government as part of a deregulatory sweep the White House is betting will juice the economy. Her path to confirmation was rockier than initially anticipated. She was one of only a few House Republicans to sponsor a union-backed suite of labor law reforms known as the PRO Act — a stance that several conservatives, like Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), questioned during her confirmation hearing. President Donald Trump's barrage against civil service employees alienated several Democratic senators who might have otherwise voted for her. Paul, former GOP leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Sen. Ted Budd (R-N.C.) were the only GOP senators to vote against Chavez-DeRemer's confirmation.

Federal judge reinstates labor board member fired by President Donald Trump

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge ruled Thursday that President Donald Trump acted illegally when he fired a member of an independent labor agency, and the judge ordered that she be allowed to remain on the job. U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell in Washington, D.C., found Trump did not have the authority to remove Gwynne Wilcox from the National Labor Relations Board. “An American president is not a king — not even an ‘elected’ one — and his power to remove federal officers and honest civil servants like plaintiff is not absolute,” Howell wrote. She acknowledged the administration’s argument that the Supreme Court may be inclined to overturn a 90-year-old decision restricting the president’s power to remove members of independent agencies. But the judge said that until and unless the high court acts, current law clearly supports keeping Wilcox in her role.
